Vascular Disease Regenerative Medicine

In recent years, the medical industry has pursued the application of stem cells in treating many different diseases.

Stem cells is a population of cells which have potential to indefinitely expand, self-renew, and differentiate into several specific types of cells. The idea of being able to regulate the body’s regenerative processes is attractive to medical professionals and patients alike, as a successful treatment could potentially mean a much more favorable outcome for the patients if the current standard of care for a given illness is to only stall disease progression.

Many types of stem cells are being explored for their therapeutic potential, including neural stem cells, induced pluripotent stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, bone marrow stem cells, adipose stem cells, and amniotic stem cells, to name a few.

Vascular diseases include congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke, chronic kidney disease, erectile dysfunction, and many more. Vascular diseases are major causes of morbidity and mortality in developed countries and are presently incurable.

With stem cell therapy, the goal is to go beyond the current standard of treatment. For certain incurable diseases, such as chronic end-organ threatening ischemia, stem cell therapy aims for improving the functionality and quality of the patient's life, which can also extend one's lifespan. While an effective treatment for vascular disease remains elusive, newer interventions using cell therapy are promising. Regenerative vascular cell therapy has the potential to reverse the progression of vascular disease, offering patients the ability to return to their baseline quality of life.
